Vietnam Visa Guide 2026

Vietnam is practical rather than generous: the 90-day e-visa is excellent for testing Da Nang, Saigon, or Hanoi, but serious long-term stays usually require company sponsorship, work authorization, or regular exits.

Best Visa Route by Situation

Tourism

The 90-day e-visa is the default. Apply through the official government portal and leave buffer time for processing or correction.

Business

Business entry is sponsorship-led. If a Vietnamese company or organization is inviting you, let them handle the required paperwork.

Retirement

Vietnam does not have a clean, popular retirement visa comparable to Thailand. Retirees usually rely on e-visas, sponsorship, or a different regional base.

Remote work

There is no formal Vietnam digital nomad visa. The practical route is e-visa plus compliance caution, or a proper work/TRC route if locally employed.

Visa Types to Compare

90-day e-visa

Nomads, scouts, frequent regional travelers

The practical default. Apply only through the official government portal.

Business-sponsored visa

Company visits, local commercial activity

Requires a Vietnamese inviting or sponsoring organization.

Work permit + TRC

Formal employment or company setup

The realistic long-term route, but paperwork-heavy.

Tourism visa runs

People testing Vietnam before committing

Common, but build in buffer time and never treat approval as automatic.

My practical recommendation

Do not plan your whole move around forum advice or an old YouTube comment. Use the official source links above, then confirm the exact documents with the embassy, immigration office, employer, or a reputable local agent before booking a one-way flight.
